THE MOUNTAIN

We caught our first glimpse of Mt. Ruapehu (2,796 m) on February 28. It was very exciting to see snow again. Mt. Ruapehu is the North Island’s highest peak and is an active volcano. The last eruption occurred on September 23, 1995. This mountain is home to New Zealand’s largest ski area. Snow will begin falling in Mar for the 2003 ski season.

This mountain is also the mountain that Peter Jackson used for Mt Doom in the Lord of the Rings
