We cycled to Cannon Beach, Oregon to watch the Annual Sand Sculpting Contest. Every year, the sand used in hourglasses becomes the medium for an array of delightful formations as thousands of spectators watch the action. Sandcastle Day began 39 years ago, after the 1964 tsunami, sent from Alaska after an earthquake, wiped out the bridge that left Cannon Beach residents relatively isolated. They wanted to organize something fun for the kids and like sand on clothes after a windstorm, it stuck.
